Every great story begins with a spark of inspiration. For Doodle Detectives, that spark came from a simple question: What if dogs could teach us about history?
What followed was a journey of creativity, heart, and a deep love for storytelling—and two very special golden doodles who would become the heroes of a brand-new adventure series.
The Real Teddy and Copper 🐾
Teddy and Copper are inspired by real golden doodles—dogs who are curious, loyal, playful, and impossibly lovable. Anyone who's ever known a golden doodle knows they have personality. They're the kind of dogs who tilt their heads when you talk to them, who notice everything, and who seem to understand more than they let on.
"We wanted characters kids could relate to—brave, funny, kind, and always ready for adventure. What better companions than two pups?"
From the beginning, we knew these weren't going to be just any dogs. Teddy and Copper needed to feel real—with distinct personalities, unique strengths, and a friendship that kids could see themselves in.
Meet Teddy:
Teddy is the enthusiastic one. She's brave, bouncy, and always first to notice when something magical is happening. With her curly red fur and fearless heart, she dives into every adventure headfirst. Teddy leads with her heart—she feels things deeply and acts on instinct and courage.
Meet Copper:
Copper is the thoughtful one. He's observant, clever, and has a nose for solving problems. With his straighter fur and gentle demeanor, he's the calm to Teddy's energy. Copper leads with logic—he thinks things through, sniffs out clues, and makes sure they don't miss important details.
Together, they're unstoppable. Heart and logic. Courage and caution. Every great team needs both.
Why Time Travel? ⏳
We've always believed that history is the greatest story ever told. It's filled with heroes, mysteries, triumphs, heartbreak, and lessons that still matter today.
But let's be honest—for many kids, history can feel boring. Dates, names, and events in dusty textbooks don't always spark excitement. We wanted to change that.
"What if history wasn't something you read about—it was something you experienced?"
By sending Teddy and Copper back in time, we make history personal. Kids don't just learn that the pyramids were built in ancient Egypt—they meet Nari, a young girl who needs help finding a missing rope. They don't just read about the Mayflower—they search the ship with Abigail to find her lost bird, Pip.
Suddenly, history isn't about memorizing facts. It's about empathy, connection, and understanding. It's about seeing the humanity in every moment.
The Magic of Preservation ✨
One of the most important decisions we made early on was this: Teddy and Copper don't change history.
They can't prevent tragedies. They can't rewrite the past. Instead, they do something far more powerful—they preserve it. They save the small moments of kindness, courage, and humanity that might otherwise be forgotten.
Why does this matter?
- It teaches respect for history. The past happened. We honor it by remembering it truthfully.
- It highlights the power of small acts. Not every hero is famous. Sometimes the smallest gesture makes the biggest difference.
- It shows that kindness echoes through time. The rope returned to Nari, the bird reunited with Abigail—these moments ripple forward, shaping history in quiet ways.
"We don't need to change the world. We just need to preserve the moments that remind us why it's worth protecting."
The Clue Crate: Where Magic Lives 🗝️
Central to every adventure is the Clue Crate—a wooden chest in Teddy and Copper's clubhouse filled with mysterious artifacts from across time.
When history needs help, one of these artifacts begins to glow. A golden scarab. A wooden compass. A feather. A key. Each one is a doorway to a different moment in time.
The magic is simple but powerful:
- Teddy notices the glimmer
- Copper confirms it with a sniff
- They touch the artifact together and say: "Sniff. Scout. Figure it out!"
- In a swirl of light, they're whisked through time
And when their mission is complete? A small souvenir appears in the Clue Crate—proof that the journey really happened. A tiny triangle of sand. A blue feather. A reminder that every adventure leaves its mark.
Writing for Young Readers 📚
Creating a children's book series comes with a unique responsibility. We're not just entertaining—we're shaping how kids see the world.
Here's what guides every word we write:
1. Respect kids' intelligence
Children are smarter than we often give them credit for. They can handle complex emotions, nuanced storytelling, and real history—as long as it's presented in an age-appropriate, emotionally safe way.
2. Make it emotionally warm
The world can be a scary place. We want Doodle Detectives to be a cozy place—where bravery is celebrated, kindness wins, and every story ends with hope.
3. Let kids see themselves
Teddy and Copper face challenges, make mistakes, and solve problems together. They model teamwork, curiosity, and resilience—skills kids can use in their own lives.
4. Spark curiosity
If a child finishes one of our books and asks, "Can we learn more about ancient Egypt?"—we've done our job. History should inspire questions, not just provide answers.
What's Next for Teddy and Copper? 🚀
We're just getting started! The Clue Crate holds countless artifacts, each one a doorway to a new adventure. Here's a sneak peek at what's coming:
- Book 1: Paws at the Pyramids — Ancient Egypt (Coming 2025!)
- Book 2: Paws on the Mayflower — The Mayflower voyage, 1620
- The Titanic Time Jump — The RMS Titanic, 1912
- Light in the Storm — A historic lighthouse
- The Apple and the Sky — Isaac Newton and gravity

Each book will transport readers to a different time and place, always with the same heart: preserve what matters, honor the past, and celebrate the kindness that connects us all.
A Story Born from Love 💛
Creating Teddy and Copper has been a labor of love. They started as sketches on paper, became characters in our hearts, and now they're ready to become friends to children everywhere.
"We hope that through Teddy and Copper, kids learn that history isn't just something that happened long ago—it's alive in every moment, every choice, and every act of kindness we make today."
Thank you for joining us on this journey. We can't wait to see where Teddy and Copper take us next—and we're so glad you're coming along for the adventure. 🐾✨
